Escambia County issued the following announcement on November 16.

Escambia County is pleased to honor the late Gary Diamond, who was recently posthumously recognized as the 2021 Career Firefighter of the Year. On Dec. 26, 2020, Diamond tragically lost his life.

In 1982, Diamond began his Escambia County Fire Rescue career as a volunteer firefighter at the Ensley Volunteer Fire Department and eventually transferred to the Molino Volunteer Fire Department. In 2006, he joined Navarre Beach Fire Rescue as a career firefighter and EMT. He retired from Navarre Beach Fire Rescue as a captain.

After retiring from Navarre Beach Fire Rescue, Diamond volunteered with Escambia County Fire Rescue as a fleet transport driver.

“Gary was a dedicated servant to the citizens of Escambia County," said Escambia County Public Safety Director Eric Gilmore. "While we are saddened he is no longer with us, we will continue to honor Gary’s legacy within Escambia County Fire Rescue. It’s a privilege to present this proclamation to the Diamond family."

Accepting the proclamation on behalf of Gary Diamond was his wife, Cindy.

The Escambia County Board of County Commissioners commends and honors Gary Diamond's life, and his time of service to the people of Escambia County.
